CuteZCute cutter

What a fun new sandwich cutter! I have used this a couple of times now but I don't think that I have shared any photos before. The cutter set actually makes several different sandwiches - frog and bear pictured and cat & pig not pictured. There is the option of either stamping out or cutting out the face making for endless possibilities and not just sandwiches.

Heidi's lunch - not travelling anywhere, just sitting in the fridge until she comes home at lunchtime.
Christmas Crack snack mix (recipe) , strawberries, veggies and a froggy sandwich
I know she'll want some ranch dip and I'll put it in the veggie cup when she asks.

Rose & Amy had very similar lunch items - neither one wanted the snack mix so just fruit and veggies for them
For Rose: Bear sandwich, hummus dip for her celery, tomatoes, cucumbers and carrot coins, strawberries

The carrots and tomatoes are from our garden. Hopefully, we'll have some strawberries soon. They are coming a few at a time right now and the little garden harvesting girls seem to keep eating them before any make it inside! Same for the green beans and snap peas.  Ah well - least they are eating their veggies.

For Amy: cucumbers, carrots, celery, strawberries and a froggy sandwich

Recently I received my order from All Things For Sale with lots of fun goodies inside. Hopefully it will give me a little inspiration as I feel that the creative juices have not really been flowing lately. Do you ever get in those kinds of ruts? Probably I need to go through and tidy up my bento accessories storage area. That usually helps me get back in the swing of things. You know, kind of like how little children clean their rooms - 10% cleaning and 90% playing with stuff they just found! haha.

These are some items that I used in these lunches today.

Oh, there you are Perry!

I haven't been feeling especially creative lately and then I found a theme inspiration in a bag of fruit snacks! Phineas and Ferb fruit snacks. I picked them up when I was away for work since I've never seen them in Bermuda and I thought they might be fun. When I was rummaging around in the snack container the other day,  I spotted one and knew it would be perfect for Heidi's lunch.

Ham sandwiches with cheese accents - Perry, Phineas & Ferb
carrots & cucumbers, apple & pear slices underneath fruit snacks

She had some dip for her veggies when it was time to eat. I googled Phineas and Ferb and saw several images of a Perry sandwich and the Phineas sandwiches. No idea who thought of this first, but those links are the images that caught my eye. This was one sandwich cut into three pieces. I just freehand cut the cheese for Phineas and Ferb, it was pretty easy. Heidi thought they turned out really cute, so she had to eat her lunch at 10:30 am!

Amy and Rose had already left for ballet camp when I made this. Their lunches were a flower theme with sandwiches exactly like this one from last week. I didn't have time to take a photo of theirs as they were in a rush to get out the door, but I was able to leisurely pack Heidi's lunch and take TWO pictures even! It was so nice not to be in a crazy rush!

Heart bento lunch for Rosie

Life is crazy. School is still in until the end of the month and I have been making lunch everyday but there just hasn't been much time to post! I have a short break today so here's a lunch from the past week or so.

Hearts for Rosie
strawberries and clementines, carrot sticks, cucumber rounds,
2 cherry 100 tomatoes from our garden (they're fab!)
rice ball with a heart fruit leather, a few meatballs.
I put a take out container of BBQ sauce in her lunch box too.
I saved it from a restaurant.

I made the rice with a rice mold that had a heart indent on it. You really couldn't see the heart though. So I just topped it with a fruit leather instead. Maybe you're meant to fill the indent with something? I dunno.

She only ate about half of this lunch.

Flower bento for Rose

Rose's lunch
ham flower, cherry tomatoes from our garden, club crackers
mini bird cup holds a few gummy fruit snacks
red grapes, strawberry rose, cucumber slices,
blueberries in a tulip cup, clementine

I tucked the bird cup down into the box so it would close, it's just sticking up for the photo. She ate almost everything here. She asked for these crackers so that was easy ;)

You're a STAR bento for Rose

Star themed bento for Rose -- with NO SANDWICH. I asked her what she wanted for lunch today and she said I don't want a sandwich. It's official. Sandwiches are off the list!

broccoli, yellow cauliflower, carrot stars, 2 rice stars, corn, meatballs
2 cherry tomatoes from our garden
apple stars, babybel cheddar cheese, kiwi and strawberries

I included a teeny little spoon and a mini cup (saved from takeout) of BBQ sauce for her meatballs.
The broccoli and the cauliflower are lightly steamed, the carrots are raw since she wanted them crunchy.

Bear-y Cute Bento

Almost every day now, Rose wants a "little" lunch box and a "little" sandwich or no sandwich. I will have to investigate a bit but I think her teacher is telling her she has to eat her whole sandwich first. I am not fussy over this eat your whole sandwich first idea- if she doesn't want to eat her whole sandwich it's perfectly fine with me.

carrot sticks, bear cup with two gummy vitamins, raspberries & blueberries
bear shaped cheddar and Ritz crackers ham & mustard sandwich, grapes

Earth Day Bento & Blog Hop

Earth Day will soon be here - it's April 22nd, 2012. My bento blogging friends are having a blog hop to celebrate Earth Day. It's my first time joining in on a blog hop- woo hoo! Don't forget to check out the bottom of the post so you can hop on over to the next blog.

Rose's "We love our Earth" bento

broccoli trees, cucumber flowers, carrot stick flowers, cherry tomatoes on the vine, animal crackers, clementine and strawberry flower, tree sandwich, bird cup with ranch dip, cheese sandwich tree, apple cutouts representing a small house amidst all of the trees and flowers & butterflies, blackberry tree with a few more blackberries tucked under the apple pieces

.
It's vegetarian. I couldn't quite make it vegan - she really wanted the ranch dip and I could not convince her to switch from a cheese sandwich either.

So how does all of this mean Earth Day to our family? On Earth Day we want to imagine and hope for an earth where there are abundant trees, flowers and animal friends and where we have reduced the impact of man's pollution  on our environment. Our Earth Day pledge will be to plant a butterfly garden at our house. Looking for some ways that you can practice Earth Friendly activities in your daily lives? Here's what we do:

recycle (whatever is applicable in your area - for us it's only glass and tin cans), set the water heater at a lower temperature, wash clothes in cold water, use earth friendly cleaners and phosphate free detergent, pack waste free lunches as much as possible, minimise trash by buying in bulk and reuse packaging materials where possible, take your own reusable grocery bag shopping - not just to the grocery store!, use cloth diapers, compost suitable materials, plant your own garden and farm organically, buy organic produce as often as possible, buy locally produced items including food as much as possible -- reduces carbon footprint due to less transport time, conserve water, don't put harmful pesticides and non-organic fertilizers on your lawn, carpool whenever possible, turn off lights/TV/computers and other electronic devices when you aren't using them, do not leave charging cords plugged in if they are not charging anything - it still draws electricity, keep your air conditioning/heat at a moderate temperature or off, keep harmful waste and batteries out of the landfill (by following your area protocol for disposal), replace all of your bulbs with new low wattage, energy efficient bulbs, replace old appliances with energy efficient ones (as the need arises), eat less meat to reduce your carbon footprint (start small and aim for one meatless meal per week).

We could definitely work harder on some of these ourselves such as buying more organic produce; it is so expensive here it becomes difficult. If cost seems prohibitive in your area also, try to at least buy organically for the items on the "dirty dozen" list.
apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, non-US nectarines, non-US grapes, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, US blueberries, lettuce, kale/collard greens

Have you planned any Earth Day activities? What can you pledge to do to help our environment?

And now for the fun -- on to the hop :)

Hey Mouseketeers!

It's M I C K E Y  M O U S E!
green grapes, Mickey Mouse cheese sandwich
Mickey Mouse egg, grape tomatoes & carrot sticks
blueberry & raspberry cup

My black food writer marker was not cooperating and was looking kind of green really. So I had a brilliant idea to paint the egg and cheese ears with black food colouring. I saw it done here ages ago. Well, basically I made a mess. The bento looks OK but my hands don't! I also question whether this is going to make a mess when she eats it. It's all blotted and truly I only used the tiniest drop but it went a LONG way. I only touched the brush to the food colouring one time for each item! anyway, I might still try it some other time and just try to remember to be more careful!

I should mention that this is an at home lunch for Heidi. So it's not packed super tightly as it does not need to be transported :)

Lookin' Green

Green themed lunch for Heidi.
green vanilla yogurt with sprinkles in the green cup, honeydew melon,
popcorn with green sprinkles, craisins, bologna sandwich - frog prince

I started out making her sandwich with the frog prince lunch punch and then remembered that Bento Blog Network has a green theme this week. I have been wanting to participate in those for weeks now but I never remember to get it together. So a few quick changes of plan and Viola! Green themed lunch.

Shark Attack!

Well maybe they are sharks. My Mom thought they were dolphins, I think they look like Tinfoil Barbs, kids said they are sharks. We'll just call 'em sharks then. Everyone had the same again.

honeydew melon, PB sandwiches

Spot & his kitty friend.

Somehow - I missed taking a photo of Heidi's lunch today! Here are the other two.

Spot the puppy for Amy
diced peaches, strawberries, granola bar, vitamins
honeydew melon, Peanut butter sandwich with puppy cheese topper

Rarely do I use the food colour markers as I figure they probably don't need that added to their diet. Amy has been just begging me to to use them on her lunch. I think someone at school must have pretty coloured sandwiches! Well I decided to do it as a surprise today  - and when she spied me making her lunch she was so excited you would have thought I filled it with candy! She had to go for a vaccination today so I thought this might make her happy when she got back to school just in time for lunch. (She was very brave at the Dr.'s and the Dr was just fabulous with her as usual so I was relieved.)

Rose's Lunch - almost the same as above
diced peaches, strawberry, granola bar, vitamins
honeydew melon, strawberry jam semi-sealed sandwich (it didn't work out too well) with an American cheese kitty on top

There have been odd times where not much lunch has been eaten in the past 2 weeks or so. Amy claims that she doesn't have enough time. Rose doesn't really have an answer. I have been trying to put in more fruit and other things that they really like without many new items,  but I cannot tell if it made a difference or not. It's still pretty hot here and maybe they just really aren't that hungry at lunchtime. If it continues I'll ask the teachers for their thoughts on what might be happening.

craisins, cucumbers, grape tomato, carrot sticks
house shaped ham sandwich with fruit leather door & windows.

I expect the crust to be uneaten --
but here's hoping that she tries the tomato:)

Flower Power

Very similar lunches today for both girls - the only changes are omissions for the picky one. It's flower power baby.

Amy's Lunch
granola bites, cucumber flowers, icing flower
frozen frubes yogurt, watermelon flowers
flower ham sandwich with pink sugar decoration

Rose's Lunch:
granola bites, cucumber flowers, grape tomatoes
icing flower, frozen frubes yogurt, watermelon & kiwi flowers
flower ham sandwich with pink sugar decoration

I was planning on putting the groovy magnets on the fronts of their planet boxes but they insisted on the retro cats today! So not exactly an outside /inside theme.  Maybe I'll make a kitty lunch tomorrow...
