Shel Silverstein's Birthday today!

We are celebrating the birth of Shel Silverstein, he would have been 84 today. I remember when my Mom first gave me A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends, I instantly read them cover to cover. The poems made me chuckle and I loved the drawings. Right before school started in September, I bought A light in the Attic for my 8 year old. She enjoyed it just as much as her Mom and has read loads of poems aloud to her sisters.

Today's post is part of a blog hop with my Bento Bloggers and Friends in honour of Shel Silverstein's birthday. Welcome to any new readers! To hop along to the next lunch in the hop, click the button at the end of the post.

This short poem from  A Light in the Attic , gave us all a giggle and inspired today's lunch.

Gumeye Ball

There's an eyeball in the gumball machine,
Right there between the red and the green,
Lookin' at me as if to say,
"You don't need any more gum today."

~Shel Silverstein

Rose's lunch is a cheese sandwich with a tortilla gumball machine topper. yellow tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese, grapes and blueberries.

I heart you, Valentine!

Valentine's Day is right around the corner so I made a
fun little lunch for one of my wee Valentines.
We are actually on mid-term break right now
so this lunch was eaten at home.

I <3 u sandwich is a simple strawberry jam and peanut butter sandwich with a heart cutout and some cheddar cheese toppers. You might see the peanut butter if you look really closely, it's under the top slice of bread. This sandwich could not have been easier to make. Cut out the main heart shape, cut a mini heart out of the middle of one slice. Spread the bottom slice of bread with jam and the top slice with peanut butter. Top with the cheddar cutouts and voila!

Heidi also has honeydew melon cubes topped with strawberry hearts, a few grapes and some baby carrots. We so rarely have baby carrots here in Bermuda. They are fun to try every now and then but I must be honest, our local carrots are the tasty ones!

Today's lunch is part of a Happy Valentine's Day lunch blog hop. Please click the button to hop over see what Becoming a Bentoholic has made.

When you arrive back at my post you will have seen all of the posts in this hop. This hop was part 2, if you would like to see part 1 (that went live earlier this morning) please start here.

Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics are here! Here's a fun lunch that I made for myself in my Easy Lunchboxes to celebrate the start of the Olympics.
I made a peanut butter sandwich with a
provolone and cheddar torch shaped topper.
I packed baby carrots & ranch dip in the mini green cup
and ended with strawberries and green grapes for something sweet.

The Winter Olympics aren't big in Bermuda and we don't have many athletes that participate.
I'll be cheering for all of the Commonwealth Athletes during these Olympics.
Good Luck to all!

My Favourite 13 lunches of 2013!

Happy New Year everyone! Wow. Who knew it would be so hard to choose my favourite 13 lunches! I think I love them all so the girls helped me narrow down my final decision to a lucky 13 for 2013.

13. Fancy Flower Sandwich
I love the ease of this lunch. The sandwich looks like a fancy flower but it was so simple to make using a cutter set. While I was writing this post and choosing my favourite lunches Rose said - "Oh I remember that lunch - it was yummy!" It definitely had to make the cut.

12. Happy Birthday Amy!
What's not to love? Happy Birthday to one of my sweet girls, sandwiches on a stick, a rainbow of fruit.
This was an easy pick for my favourite 13 lunches.

11. Momables - Hummus Rainbow Lunch
I love this lunch, nothing is overly fancy, just some yummy fruits, veggies and hummus, and some pretty little hat sammies.

This was so fast and simple to put together after dinner, right when I was packing up the leftovers.
The moustache-mouth always makes me smile :)

My first time ever attempting cheese art. I didn't get around to posting another one again. It just takes me a little longer than I usually have for lunches, but I still want to try again.

This was a lunch for me that I made for a blog hop. It's easy for me to choose my blog hop lunches since I tend to spend a little extra time making them to fit the theme - I end up loving them all!

I love the bushy tail!

The photo wasn't so great (back when my camera was on the fritz) but I just love this little lunch and the mini banana.

I like the baby ducks and the shining sun. Makes me smile and think happy thoughts.

Sort of a late breakfast early lunch meal for me. This is one of my favourites because it was just a fun, low effort bento that looked and tasted pretty good!

What I love the most about this lunch was the reaction from my daughter (which is why I make fun lunches in the first place). She was thrilled.
So it's easily in my top 3.

I don't get the chance to make many Muffin Tin Meals any more and this was just plain fun to make.
It hits the trifecta - fun to make, fun to eat and healthy too!

I LOVED making the cute little bunny rolls and all of the girls were over the moon when they saw them. Even if my eldest thought they looked more like mice. Ha! Easily my favourite lunch of 2013!

This post is part of a fun linky party with my Bento Bloggers and Friends. I am glad to have started this blogging journey and to have made so many new friends. They really are a talented bunch that inspire me daily. Click the button to get to the linky party and discover my BBF's Favourite Lunches of 2013.

Jolly Holiday - fun blog hop.

As mentioned last week I am joining in on another blog hop with the Bento Bloggers and Friends. There are actually 4 hops in total this year. I have only joined in on the middle two, the last one will be on Dec 19th. You can find links to them all here.

This is Amy's Jolly Holiday lunch.

Amy has the jolly old man himself for lunch. Her sandwiches are chocolate and peanut butter spread shaped like Santa's hat and his best reindeer pal, Rudolph. She has lots of fruit - half a clementine, strawberries and cantaloupe. Trix yogurt and greek yogurt combo complete her lunch.  It was time to grocery shop so we were out of all of the raw veggies that she likes.

I have continued to pack the LunchBox Love FREE printable holiday jokes. The kids are loving these jokes.
Q: What do you call Santa when he has no money?
A: Saint Nickel-less
Hardy har har!

Now on to the fun holiday blog hop.  Click the button to hop on over to Bento Days to see what Jean has made. There are 15 blogs to hop through. When you hop back to me you will have seen them all!

Season's Eatings - A holiday blog hop

Today I am joining in on a blog hop with the Bento Bloggers and Friends. There are actually a series of holiday hops this month. Stay tuned as I will be participating in another hop next week!

For today's hop I made a fun Gingerbread People themed lunch for Rosie. Tonight we are going to have a gingerbread cookie baking evening in our house. It seems like everyone needs to bring cookies for something tomorrow! We're going to go with gingerbread people. Amy has to bake and decorate a bunch for her Brownies party as part of her cooking badge. I expect that we'll all have some fun in the kitchen. I"ll try to snap some photos to share.

For lunch Rose has greek yogurt & cherry trix yogurt mixed together, half of a clementine, cantaloupe, strawberries, and a marshmallow gingerbread boy.  Her sandwiches are her favourite chocolate & peanut butter (who wouldn't like that?) filling. I cut them into the shape of girl and boy gingerbread people.

I tucked a fun joke in her lunch. These jokes are free online printables from Lunchbox Love. You can find them here.  The joke Q: What did the gingerbread man put on his bed?  A: a cookie sheet! haha. Kid's humour, I love it and I know that Rose and her friends will too!

This post is part of the Season's Eatings hop. Click the button below to hop on over to Student Bento to see what eatings Stacey has made for the Season ^_^. There are about a dozen or so blogs participating. When you hop back to this post you will have seen them all. Enjoy!

Spookie Oookie Lunch

Amy wanted a spookie Halloween lunch so this is what I came up with, a funky monster which looks sort of happy and lots of monster parts! Today's post is part of a fun Frightful Fall blog hop by the Bento Blogger's and Friends. At the end of the post click the button to hop over to the next Frightful Fall lunch.

Amy has mozzarella cheese & fruit leather fingers, spookie boiled egg eyeballs with grape slices and dried cranberry accents, apple and almonds monster mouth and a few grapes. The gummy candy Vampire teeth are made by the Natural Confectionery Company. Amy's sandwich is a turkey sandwich with lettuce hair, cucumber and candy eyes and a red pepper mouth.

Rose has a Haunted Pumpkin Patch Lunch.

I packed her a Wadson's Farms baby butter lettuce salad with cheese pumpkins, ghost cucumbers, skull carrots and grape tomatoes. She also has red & yellow pepper strips, grapes, strawberries, a couple of grapes and an owl shaped cheese sandwich. This lunch is vegetarian. I packed her a lunchbox love note from the Halloween Jokes series. Amy also had one but it didn't make it into the photo. Her joke went something like this - What kind of fruit do vampires love? Neck-tarines.  hahaha!

So here's how the hop works. Click the button below to hop to Sarah's blog Zoe's Lunchbox. Keep clicking the buttons to see all of the lunches. When you arrive back here you will have seen them all. There are 15 different blogs.

Arrr! It's Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Ahoy there mateys! Do ye know wha' today is lads an' lasses? It's talk like a pirate day! Me sent this here lunch t'school with me wee scallywag. Me hopes she has a jolly roger good time at lunch.

Rose's vegetarian lunch includes a boiled egg shaped like a fish, some goldfish crackers, red and green grapes and yogurt covered raisins for a sweet treat. I also packed carrot sticks and grape tomatoes. I made her cheese sandwich in the shape of a pirate! I didn't have any pirate themed cutters and I felt like I needed a little inspiration so I thought back to my Funky Lunch workshop. I used a circle cutter to cut the sandwich, and used red pepper for the bandanna, orange pepper for the nose, cheese and raisin for the eyes, fruit leather for the smile and earring. The eye patch was cut out of Nori with a pair of kitchen scissors.

Rose was so happy to see her lunch in the morning that she wanted a photo with her lunch. She also decided to take that pink bandanna for her cloth napkin!

This lunch is part of a blog hop. Please click the button below to see the fabulous Pirate lunch that Rebecca from Bentos on the Bayou made.

May the 4th be with you!

Happy Star Wars Day! This fun Star Wars themed lunch is for me!
strawberries & a Death Star clementine. Ewok teddy grahams under attack by a Stormtrooper
Princess Leia cheese sandwich with oreo hair buns, strawberry fruit leather, Vermont cheddar and nori features, on a bed of spinach & walnuts Light saber picks hold a red grape each.
The strawberries were tossed on the spinach to make a yummy spinach, strawberry & walnut salad. The little red dip cup holds balsamic vinaigrette. Yum!
There are a lot of firsts in this lunch, first time drawing on a clementine -- trickier than you might think!, first time using nori (eyes and eyelash details on Princess Leia - easy to work with using tweezers), my first time eating a spinach only salad. Yup, it's true. I am not usually a spinach lover. My husband started sneaking spinach into our regular lettuce salads and I didn't even notice! Now I am giving the spinach only salad a go. It's only a small salad as you can probably tell - I think I will enjoy it.
What else is special about this lunch? This lunch post is part of a blog hop. My Bento Bloggers and Friends group has gotten together and planned a fun blog hop of Star Wars lunches in honour of May the 4th. Click the button below to hop to the next Star Wars lunch. Next up is Lunches For For a Kid. In fact, this theme is so fun that lots of people want to join in! So there are TWO hops. When you get back to my blog you will have seen all of hop #1. Ho Ho Hopping for the holidays!

This time of year is so busy for us. It's a little tricky to keep up with lunch photos and I must admit that I have scaled back the cuteness a tad in the girls' lunches. I made these lunches yesterday and suddenly realised that there are only a few days left of school! The time has flown by so quickly.
Here is Rose's lunch
carrot sticks, apple slices, raspberries with white choolate chips, snowman marshmallow
tree shaped pretzels and a Christmas tree sandwich & a LunchBox Love note about Christmas trees
I love these little notes and the girls do too.
Amy had almost exactly the same as Rose but there was not enough time so I took one photo only. She wasn't going anywhere near those raspberries or pretzels so she had goldfish and extra apples instead.

My bento blogging friends are having another hop and this post is part of the hop. This time it's a holiday themed hop spread out into three shorter hops over three different weeks. This is week two. At the end of the post click on the button to hop through all of this week's hops and then also check out the Bento Blogger's and Friend's Blog to check out Week 1 (live on December 6th) and Week 3 ( live on December 20th).

Heidi's lunch
carrots sticks and dip in the EasyLunchBoxes mini dipper, apple pieces
stocking sandwich with sprinkles and marshmallow snowmen
red mini cup with a gummy vitamin inside

I made Heidi's lunch a little later in the morning and left it in the fridge until she came home at midday. I have an activity at school every morning this week so we are even busier than usual. Yesterday I went with Rose's class on a field trip to a senior's residence and sang some songs and delivered holiday cards that the children made on Monday's craft morning. They sang a Baha'i song, Hanukkah Song, Kwanzaa Song and two Christmas Songs. They did a great job! Today is Amy's holiday musical concert and thankful lunch and Friday is her Creative Writing Workshop presentation where the children will read the books that they have written and illustrated this term. I am looking forward to the school break and spending some time at home with the girls :) Hopefully you will all enjoy a little break too!

Now onto the hop.
Click the button to visit Lunch Snack and Sninner to see what holiday lunch Tracie has come up with. If you keep hopping  until you get back to me you will have seen them all. There are 17 fabulous lunch blogs in total.

Halloween Blog Hop

It's getting closer and closer to candy night! I can't wait to take the girls trick or treating.  Today is another lunch blog hop to get us all in the fun Halloween mood. Click the button at the end of the post to hop along to the next blog.

Here's Amy's lunch packed in a planetbox
carrot sticks, green grapes, gummy vitamin
strawberries & cantaloupe, witch finger sandwiches (ham) with fruit leather fingernails
She told me that she wanted lots of picks and things. So she has 2 bat picks, 2 witch fingers and 2 ghost rings

Halloween lunch for Rosie in a planetbox
Chex Mix (sort of looks like Jack O Lantern parts), green grapes, apple Jack o Lantern Mouth,
cheddar Jack o Lantern, pumpkin shaped cantaloupe, Jack o Lantern Pizza Pocket
The paper behind is a small wax paper treat bag.

Last night for dinner we had cheese & onion pasties. I used a small amount of the shortcrust pastry to make some pizza pockets for the girls. It was very easy, cut out pumpkin shapes using a cookie cutter. Put a small amount of pizza sauce, one slice of pepperoni and a bit of grated cheese on one pumpkin shape.  Cover it with another pumpkin shape and seal the edges with a fork. Cut a small slit in the top to allow steam to escape, brush with milk and then bake at 400F for about 15 minutes. Yum!

Heidi's EasyLunchboxes Halloween Lunch

Heidi had apple monster mouth, grapes and a spider PB & J

The original plan was to draw a spider web on the circle cutout with a food safe marker and then stick in a spider pick. Well, my marker skills were lacking today so I flipped it over and used a spider cutter to cut a spider out and then left it all together so there was enough sandwich. The spider alone wouldn't be enough.

Of course the other side with the messy marker didn't have the little crusty bits of bread showing - DOH!

If you would like to see all of my Halloween lunches, crafts and activities click here.

Now on to the hop! Click on the button below to hop along to the next blog. I expect there will be lots of fun and creative Halloween lunches to see. I can't wait to hop through them all myself :)
