School Healthy Lunch Competition

Today Amy. Rose & Heidi participated in the School Lunch Challenge.

Each student had to write a paragraph about what should be in a healthy lunch and talk about the food groups and their health benefits Then they had to plan and make a healthy lunch to bring to school to be judged. They were working on ideas for the past few days. They sure had plenty of ideas!

Here's what they made (with a little help, all choices were theirs, some chopping was mine).

Amy, Age 9

Amy chose, cucumber & carrot sticks (from our garden), a rainbow of fruits, Organic Valley mozzarella cheese stick, 2 Lady Moon Organic grape tomatoes, Natural no salt almonds and an Applegate Naturals ham sandwich.

Rose, Age 7, vegetarian

Rose chose boiled egg on organic spinach (that is one egg split in half with the yolk removed), berries, carrots, grape tomatoes & bell peppers, unsweetened coconut & pepitas, with an Applegate Naturals ham, Applegate Naturals cheese & mustard sandwich.

Heidi, Age 5

Heidi chose carrot sticks from our garden with organic ranch, Organic Valley mozzarella cheese stick, natural no salt almonds, strawberry from our garden & clementine, pineapple and an Applegate Naturals ham & mustard sandwich.

They were to be judged on  their Nutrition Paragraph, Nutrient content - 1 point for each food group actually included, Eye appeal - 1 point for each colour in the lunch, Original use of vegetable - different and fun ways in which the vegetable are included and bonus points for a litter free lunch and 1 point if their drink was water. The Nutrition paragraph plus a photo of the lunch of the 3 winners from each class are to be submitted to the health department and would be judged against the other schools.

A good effort by all, I am pleased with their lunch creations.

Snack box lunch packed in a Planetbox Rover

Remember me? So... I haven't blogged since October. I've found life to be very busy and I haven't photographed a single lunch until now. I found a moment this morning to take a photo of two lunches. Yay! Back on the wagon ;)

Snack box Lunch packed in a Planetbox Rover.

This was for Heidi. She has a boiled egg (yolk removed), grapes & strawberries (from our garden - deelish!), some nuts, apples, carrot coins with a bit of ranch dip and 2 slices of Peanut Butter Bread from one of our favourite lunch cookbooks. The Best Homemade Kids' Lunches on The Planet .

If you haven't bought it yet - go and get it right now. You will love it!

Heidi ate everything in her lunch save a few nuts.

Gluten Free, Dairy Free lunch with Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Yesterday, I posted one of Rose's favourite kinds of lunch - the snack box. Today her Planetbox has her second favourite kind of lunch - salad.

Rose has Applegate Farms chicken strips, red grapes, dairy & gluten free choc chip banana bread (recipe from Natural Nutrition) with probably a bit too large of a smear of dairy free butter like spread! The main compartment has all of her favourite veggies in a salad - romaine lettuce, grape tomatoes, yellow mini bell pepper, carrot coins & cucumber.

When she came home she said it was the best lunch ever, even the chicken. Love her.

First Day (for 3 of my girls!)

Today is back to school for 3 of my 4 girls. Emily won't start until tomorrow.
Here are Rose - P2, Heidi - P1, & Amy - P4 at school this morning.

First day of school lunches all have a flower theme.

Rose's lunch
grapes, strawberries, apples, cheese, almonds, carrot sticks, grape tomatoes & a cheese flower sandwich

Don't you love that little grapes flower? I got the flower ideas from BentOnBetterLunches.

Heidi's Lunch
almost the same as Rose - grapes, strawberries, carrots sticks with ranch dip, apple slices, cheese and a PB&J sandwich

Amy's lunch is packed in the Planetbox Shuttle. It's one of her favourite containers.
2 flower shaped ham sandwiches, grapes, strawberries, carrot sticks & cucumber rounds.

I always get a little bit nervous on their first day of anything - school, camp,  a new activity. They all were happy to get back and see all of their friends and go to their new classrooms. Meanwhile, I have a few butterflies. I hope they are all having a fabulous first day back at school. I can't wait to hear about it at pickup.

Here are some items that I used when making this lunch.

My Favourite 13 lunches of 2013!

Happy New Year everyone! Wow. Who knew it would be so hard to choose my favourite 13 lunches! I think I love them all so the girls helped me narrow down my final decision to a lucky 13 for 2013.

13. Fancy Flower Sandwich
I love the ease of this lunch. The sandwich looks like a fancy flower but it was so simple to make using a cutter set. While I was writing this post and choosing my favourite lunches Rose said - "Oh I remember that lunch - it was yummy!" It definitely had to make the cut.

12. Happy Birthday Amy!
What's not to love? Happy Birthday to one of my sweet girls, sandwiches on a stick, a rainbow of fruit.
This was an easy pick for my favourite 13 lunches.

11. Momables - Hummus Rainbow Lunch
I love this lunch, nothing is overly fancy, just some yummy fruits, veggies and hummus, and some pretty little hat sammies.

This was so fast and simple to put together after dinner, right when I was packing up the leftovers.
The moustache-mouth always makes me smile :)

My first time ever attempting cheese art. I didn't get around to posting another one again. It just takes me a little longer than I usually have for lunches, but I still want to try again.

This was a lunch for me that I made for a blog hop. It's easy for me to choose my blog hop lunches since I tend to spend a little extra time making them to fit the theme - I end up loving them all!

I love the bushy tail!

The photo wasn't so great (back when my camera was on the fritz) but I just love this little lunch and the mini banana.

I like the baby ducks and the shining sun. Makes me smile and think happy thoughts.

Sort of a late breakfast early lunch meal for me. This is one of my favourites because it was just a fun, low effort bento that looked and tasted pretty good!

What I love the most about this lunch was the reaction from my daughter (which is why I make fun lunches in the first place). She was thrilled.
So it's easily in my top 3.

I don't get the chance to make many Muffin Tin Meals any more and this was just plain fun to make.
It hits the trifecta - fun to make, fun to eat and healthy too!

I LOVED making the cute little bunny rolls and all of the girls were over the moon when they saw them. Even if my eldest thought they looked more like mice. Ha! Easily my favourite lunch of 2013!

This post is part of a fun linky party with my Bento Bloggers and Friends. I am glad to have started this blogging journey and to have made so many new friends. Jolly Holiday - fun blog hop.

As mentioned last week I am joining in on another blog hop with the Bento Bloggers and Friends. There are actually 4 hops in total this year. I have only joined in on the middle two, the last one will be on Dec 19th. You can find links to them all here.

This is Amy's Jolly Holiday lunch.

Amy has the jolly old man himself for lunch. Her sandwiches are chocolate and peanut butter spread shaped like Santa's hat and his best reindeer pal, Rudolph. She has lots of fruit - half a clementine, strawberries and cantaloupe. Trix yogurt and greek yogurt combo complete her lunch.  It was time to grocery shop so we were out of all of the raw veggies that she likes.

I have continued to pack the LunchBox Love FREE printable holiday jokes. The kids are loving these jokes.
Q: What do you call Santa when he has no money?
A: Saint Nickel-less
Hardy har har!

Now on to the fun holiday blog hop.  Click the button to hop on over to Bento Days to see what Jean has made. There are 15 blogs to hop through. When you hop back to me you will have seen them all!

Season's Eatings - A holiday blog hop

Today I am joining in on a blog hop with the Bento Bloggers and Friends. There are actually a series of holiday hops this month. Stay tuned as I will be participating in another hop next week!

For today's hop I made a fun Gingerbread People themed lunch for Rosie. Tonight we are going to have a gingerbread cookie baking evening in our house. It seems like everyone needs to bring cookies for something tomorrow! We're going to go with gingerbread people. Amy has to bake and decorate a bunch for her Brownies party as part of her cooking badge. I expect that we'll all have some fun in the kitchen. I"ll try to snap some photos to share.

For lunch Rose has greek yogurt & cherry trix yogurt mixed together, half of a clementine, cantaloupe, strawberries, and a marshmallow gingerbread boy.  Her sandwiches are her favourite chocolate & peanut butter (who wouldn't like that?) filling. I cut them into the shape of girl and boy gingerbread people.

I tucked a fun joke in her lunch. These jokes are free online printables from Lunchbox Love. You can find them here.  The joke Q: What did the gingerbread man put on his bed?  A: a cookie sheet! haha. Kid's humour, I love it and I know that Rose and her friends will too!

This post is part of the Season's Eatings hop. Click the button below to hop on over to Student Bento to see what eatings Stacey has made for the Season ^_^. There are about a dozen or so blogs participating. When you hop back to this post you will have seen them all. Enjoy!

A trio of trees

My mojo has been lacking lately. I have been making lots of healthy lunches, they've just been a little low on flair. Here are some recent lunches. All of the girls had similar lunches, keeping it easy for me!

Heidi's lunch

Heidi has strawberries, half a banana, green grapes and a tree shaped sandwich ( probably ham but I can't remember!)

Amy's Lunch

Amy has cucumbers yellow peppers, green grapes, strawberries, goldfish and a tree shaped sandwich

Rosie's lunch

Rosie has yellow peppers & grape tomatoes, green grapes and strawberries, goldfish crackers and a tree shaped sandwich.

There are slight differences in the lunches as their favourites are different - banana is one of Heidi's favourites, cucumbers are one of Amy's favourites (she would never eat a banana!), bell peppers of any colour are definitely Rosie's favourite item in her lunch. So even though these are mostly the same they were each happy to have one of their favourites for lunch.

Almost everything was eaten. Rose left a bite of sandwich and Amy left the peppers. It was a trial, she still doesn't really like them. And is case you are wondering what happened to the other half of the banana - baby sister Emily ate it for breakfast. She LOVES bananas too.

Squirrelly Fun Lunch

A little squirrelly fun for lunch.

Amy has a boiled egg, honeydew melon and strawberry pieces, carrot sticks and a squirrel shaped ham sandwich with a bushy tail. The tail has a little peanut butter and chocolate spread with chocolate sprinkles. That was a really special treat to find in her lunch!

Here are some items that I used when making this lunch.

Panda Themed Lunches

Today, I am guest posting over at BentOnBetterLunches. How exciting! I've made two panda themed lunches and have shared one over there and one over here.

This is Rose's fun panda themed lunch.
Rose has a panda shaped boiled egg, honeydew melon & blueberries, yellow peppers, carrot sticks and veggie dip. There is also a mini babybel cheese with a nori face to look like a panda (sort of! ha.) Rose has a special treat for her sandwich today - it's chocolate & peanut butter filling! She was thrilled at the suggestion.

I was going to open that babybel cheese and put the nori features right on it but Rose said no. It would have looked more panda like since the cheese is white but Rose said that she didn't want to eat that nori today and she didn't want it ON her cheese. So on the red wax cover it went  >_^

I'd love it if you pop over to BentOnBetterLunches to see Heidi's panda themed lunch. Hers is packed in a Planetbox shuttle and is slightly different. I'll give you a hint about one difference, she has 2 super cute mini panda sandwiches. Can you guess what I used to make them?

Here are some items that I used when making both panda themed lunches.
