Shel Silverstein's Birthday today!

We are celebrating the birth of Shel Silverstein, he would have been 84 today. I remember when my Mom first gave me A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends, I instantly read them cover to cover. The poems made me chuckle and I loved the drawings. Right before school started in September, I bought A light in the Attic for my 8 year old. She enjoyed it just as much as her Mom and has read loads of poems aloud to her sisters.

Today's post is part of a blog hop with my Bento Bloggers and Friends in honour of Shel Silverstein's birthday. Welcome to any new readers! To hop along to the next lunch in the hop, click the button at the end of the post.

This short poem from  A Light in the Attic , gave us all a giggle and inspired today's lunch.

Gumeye Ball

There's an eyeball in the gumball machine,
Right there between the red and the green,
Lookin' at me as if to say,
"You don't need any more gum today."

~Shel Silverstein

Rose's lunch is a cheese sandwich with a tortilla gumball machine topper. yellow tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese, grapes and blueberries.

First Day (for 3 of my girls!)

Today is back to school for 3 of my 4 girls. Emily won't start until tomorrow.
Here are Rose - P2, Heidi - P1, & Amy - P4 at school this morning.

First day of school lunches all have a flower theme.

Rose's lunch
grapes, strawberries, apples, cheese, almonds, carrot sticks, grape tomatoes & a cheese flower sandwich

Don't you love that little grapes flower? I got the flower ideas from BentOnBetterLunches.

Heidi's Lunch
almost the same as Rose - grapes, strawberries, carrots sticks with ranch dip, apple slices, cheese and a PB&J sandwich

Amy's lunch is packed in the Planetbox Shuttle. It's one of her favourite containers.
2 flower shaped ham sandwiches, grapes, strawberries, carrot sticks & cucumber rounds.

I always get a little bit nervous on their first day of anything - school, camp,  a new activity. They all were happy to get back and see all of their friends and go to their new classrooms. Meanwhile, I have a few butterflies. I hope they are all having a fabulous first day back at school. I can't wait to hear about it at pickup.

Here are some items that I used when making this lunch.

Here chicky, chicky!

I packed this fun little chicky lunch for Rose to take to camp a couple of weeks ago.

Rose has a couple of grape tomatoes, a little surprise treat in the chicky cup, 2 tortilla roll up sandwiches (possibly cheese but I can't remember!), a little cheese chick wrapped around them. She also has red grapes, carrot sticks and a cut apple - believe it or not those two apple pieces were from the same apple even though the colour is so different.

Here are some items that I used when making this lunch.

Summer Camp Lunch

Last week three of my girls had a week at Aqua Camp. That's a week long day camp operated at our local Aquarium, Museum & Zoo. Super fun week, and a few fun lunches too.

Here's one of Rose's vegetarian lunches packed in a Planetbox Shuttle.

Cheese sandwich pinwheels, grape tomatoes, blueberries, apple & pear slices

The Shuttle is becoming one of our favourite containers to use right now.  I can fit a whole sandwich (crusts off) in the small compartment, leaving the larger one with space for fruit & veggies. It really works out to be the perfect size!

I have never liked raw tomatoes. Rose loves grape tomatoes and I always buy them when our garden is not producing. Lately, the Lady Moon Farms organic grape tomatoes that I have been buying have just looked so inviting. So, I finally tried one. WOW! They are awesome. Now I love these raw tomatoes. Funny how your taste buds change.

Here are some items that I used when making this lunch.

My Favourite 13 lunches of 2013!

Happy New Year everyone! Wow. Who knew it would be so hard to choose my favourite 13 lunches! I think I love them all so the girls helped me narrow down my final decision to a lucky 13 for 2013.

13. Fancy Flower Sandwich
I love the ease of this lunch. The sandwich looks like a fancy flower but it was so simple to make using a cutter set. While I was writing this post and choosing my favourite lunches Rose said - "Oh I remember that lunch - it was yummy!" It definitely had to make the cut.

12. Happy Birthday Amy!
What's not to love? Happy Birthday to one of my sweet girls, sandwiches on a stick, a rainbow of fruit.
This was an easy pick for my favourite 13 lunches.

11. Momables - Hummus Rainbow Lunch
I love this lunch, nothing is overly fancy, just some yummy fruits, veggies and hummus, and some pretty little hat sammies.

This was so fast and simple to put together after dinner, right when I was packing up the leftovers.
The moustache-mouth always makes me smile :)

My first time ever attempting cheese art. I didn't get around to posting another one again. It just takes me a little longer than I usually have for lunches, but I still want to try again.

This was a lunch for me that I made for a blog hop. It's easy for me to choose my blog hop lunches since I tend to spend a little extra time making them to fit the theme - I end up loving them all!

I love the bushy tail!

The photo wasn't so great (back when my camera was on the fritz) but I just love this little lunch and the mini banana.

I like the baby ducks and the shining sun. Makes me smile and think happy thoughts.

Sort of a late breakfast early lunch meal for me. This is one of my favourites because it was just a fun, low effort bento that looked and tasted pretty good!

What I love the most about this lunch was the reaction from my daughter (which is why I make fun lunches in the first place). She was thrilled.
So it's easily in my top 3.

I don't get the chance to make many Muffin Tin Meals any more and this was just plain fun to make.
It hits the trifecta - fun to make, fun to eat and healthy too!

I LOVED making the cute little bunny rolls and all of the girls were over the moon when they saw them. Even if my eldest thought they looked more like mice. Ha! Easily my favourite lunch of 2013!

This post is part of a fun linky party with my Bento Bloggers and Friends. I am glad to have started this blogging journey and to have made so many new friends. They really are a talented bunch that inspire me daily. Click the button to get to the linky party and discover my BBF's Favourite Lunches of 2013.
I promise that you will be amazed!
