Lunch for Dad

Finally, I think this terrible flu bug is over. I am feeling much better today and all of the girls are back at school. It;s been a rough couple of weeks. About two weeks ago, I made this quick lunch for my hubby to take to work. I haven't been making him lunch lately as he's been coming home for lunch pretty often. Guess what? He ate it at home. I must admit I do love when he comes home for lunch.

carrots & cucumbers, honeydew melon & blueberries
toasted country multi-grain bread with honey mustard, roast beef & provolone

I also packed the big dipper with a little snack - his favourites -- olives, pickled onions, pickles and cheddar cheese cubes.

We have had these new Planetbox Launch containers for awhile now but haven't used them very much. The sections are perfectly divided for this sandwich! It's also great for salads. They are too big for our little kids but suitable for grownups. Also they do fit in the Planetbox Rover carry bags which I prefer!

Winnie the Pooh lunch

Today it's A.A. Milne's birthday. So I made a Winnie the Pooh lunch for my sweet Heidi.
cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes
Pooh shaped boiled egg, craisins, mini Pooh cup with white chocolate chips
green beans from our garden and carrots, mini ham sandwich

I attempted to tint my boiled egg yellow with some curry powder but it didn't quite work. Oh bother! I used our semi-new lunchbots duo. I have to say that I really love this bento box. Today, her lunchbox love note has a little fun fact about 'Roo :) I have made a couple of other Winnie the Pooh lunches in the past. Here they are.

A bear-y cute lunch and some Lunchbox Love

This started out as an extremely orange lunch. Now it's just a mostly orange lunch. I asked Amy what she wanted in her lunch today and she chose carrots, cantaloupe and goldfish. I started putting it together and then realised the orange theme emerging. I quickly added a little cucumber and craisins for variety.

Amy's lunch
cucumber slices, carrot coins, goldfish, cantaloupe, craisins
bear shaped ham sandwich

The bear sandwich has some very cute bear details stamped on it. It's a bit tricky to see in the photo but in real life it's adorable. I didn't  really have any extra time this morning to get the light just right to highlight the stamped bread. Also, I could have stamped the bread a little deeper/harder which might have shown up more in the photo. The cutter & stamp is part of a set of cookie cutters that is probably one of my best purchases of late. They make great cookies and cute sandwiches.

Rose wanted something hot again and has spaghetti and meatballs in her funtainer.
I still sent her a little side of fruit to go with it.
She chose cantaloupe and grapes. I included a little lunchbox love note in each of their lunches as I have been everyday for a while now. They have a sale on right now and it's a good time to grab some. The girls really look forward to their little notes and trivia each day. I think it's a hit at the lunch table :)

If you missed the sale you can also buy Lunchbox Love notes and some other items I used on Amazon or All Things for Sale:

Easy Lunches for a late morning

I have had a bad headache for two days in a row now :( Just couldn't get out of bed this morning. So we didn't get up until 8 am today -  lunches had to be easy and fast. It's been pretty cold (for here) lately and I asked the girls if they wanted soup. Rose and Heidi said yes, Amy still wanted a sandwich. I'll make Heidi some soup when she comes home from school at lunchtime.

Rose's Lunch - packed in a Lunchbots duo and a Thermos Funtainer
bread and butter with fruit leather stars, grapes and strawberries, chicken noodle soup

Amy's Lunch
ham sandwich with strawberry fruit leather, mini cup of m&ms, cheez its, grapes and strawberries

Last night I made delicious pulled pork in the crock pot and we had pulled pork sandwiches for dinner. I already can't wait until lunchtime so that I can have the leftovers! Yum!!

Gingerbread House 2012

I realise that Christmas was last month and a Gingerbread House post is sort of out of place in January but I still want to share our Gingerbread House. I ended up with a bit of a long blogging break over the Christmas Holiday  It wasn't planned, just sort of happened. With the girls out of school I really enjoyed spending time with them and our family and blogging took a back seat. Now I want to catch up!

So again we went with the Gingerbread House kit made by Wilton  I really think it's a good way to go instead of baking the house from scratch. I bought a few marshmallows and some extra candy to go with it but you certainly could make due with what's in the box. This year, somehow, I made the Royal icing a bit too thick. It worked out OK but was hard to squeeze. In general our Gingerbread House procedure went as follows. I am in charge of assembly and the icing. The girls tell me where to put icing and they glue on the candies. This year we also used some squeeze tube coloured icing and I let Amy use that on her own. We used a muffin tin to keep track of the candies again. I forgot to take a before picture so this is an after photo. Obviously there was lots of candy on the house already!

This is such great fun. There's a little laughter, a little candy and icing eating and everyone ends up happy and proud of their work.

Rose and Heidi wanted me to take a picture of them sneaking into the photos. Goofballs.

Emily was still a little too young to help but maybe next year. She did try to sweep the floor afterwards in the hopes of finding some stray candies I'm sure! She was most upset that I wouldn't give her any but they were all choking hazards. I did give her a little taste of icing though ;)

This is one of the Gingerbread House kits and these are the brands of icing that we used for the coloured icing. It worked quite well to "glue" the candies on the house.

A family of penguins.

School is back in and I haven't quite gotten back into our routine. I've made so many lunches already this year and only managed to take a photo on 2 days! Both of which had the same penguin sandwiches :) So here are a plethora of penguin lunches. A whole family of penguins if you will.

Last week sometime -- all girls actually had exactly the same lunch. Rose and Amy took their EasyLunchboxes and I used an old divided lunch container for Heidi. Our other two EasyLunchboxes were already packed with yummy dinner leftovers in the fridge for Mommy & Daddy.

Ham penguin sandwiches, mini penguin cup filled with white chocolate chips, goldfish and oranges & red grapes

Heidi's Lunch

Today's Lunches -- all three girls had the same Easylunchbox but I didn't have a chance to snap a photo of Heidi's.
Amy's lunch

Raspberry muffins (that I made this morning!), strawberries and penguin ham sandwiches. There are mini marshmallows inside the mini penguin cups today.

Rose's lunch
All of the same food as Amy plus I added a few grapes. Amy had grapes in her morning snack so I didn't put them in her lunch again.

I happened to be at school at lunch time today so I know that Rose ate all of her lunch, Amy had choir at lunch  so hopefully she had time to eat all of her lunch. She ate 3 muffins for breakfast today so I doubt she was starving at lunch! That little girl just cannot resist warm raspberry or blueberry muffins. Just like her mom :)
